As always with Max Hastings a meticulous analysis of the significant causes of the first World War, the role of Serbia and its nationalistic hubris, and the characters and mindsets of some of the frankly barmy chief protagonists. The personal experiences of the optimistic, often disillusioned officers and men who were caught up the chaos; finally the slaughter that destroyed the BEF, Britain's core strength wasted in pointless chaotic skirmishes before the reality set in: four years of muddy stalemate and attrition.
