I have heard of this as well Chris. In fact I believe there are some very expensive record players which cannot damage the discs at all because lasers rather than a stylus are used to play them. However, for most collectors of 78s, a broken record will be no use at all. At best, if it is a very clean break with no rough edges, you can try to sellotape along the crack - obviously on the less important side - and you may find that the side you prefer can then be played reasonably OK. This usually works OK for what is known as a hairline crack, i.e. the record is still intact, with a very fine crack running for a few inches from the edge sometimes to the label. If the record is in two or more pieces then I personally throw it in the bin. David.
