Cheap designer fakes on eBay.
I first visited Ebay five years ago, looking for an Hermes scarf as a gift. Two hours of looking at listings soon left me confused. There seemed to be a lot of items for sale that did not look right, even to my untrained eye. Five years on and far too much time spent on the Internet leave me fairly confident at spotting Hermes fakes. I hope to be able to pass on some of this information to other innocent Ebay users, to help them avoid paying top designer prices for cheap imitation goods. Please have a look at My Guides on the easy way to avoid the worst blunders, and some close up looks at some of the most common fakes regularly being listed. If you find the guides helpful then please click on the YES box. This moves them higher up the GUIDES AND REVIEWS list and makes them more accessible to others. You can leave comments in the Guest Book, and contact me through the Ebay mail system. Remember to give me your email address if you want me to reply! Thanks, Geoff.

You do not need to be a member of Facebook to view the Guides. The easiest way is to just Google: "Hermes scarf guides" and it is the top link there. You DO know don't you that 1) they don't suck the soul out of you if you join Facebook 2) you don't have to chat to people or tell your friends that you are a member and 3)you don't have to give Facebook true information ...many people don't, I am pretty sure anyway, because both Captain Kirk and Lovely Bum are friends of mine! Oh and it does not cost anything. G.

Thanks for these kind words and links. The fakers take a genuine scarf and use a large format printing camera to capture the design. This is then broken down into four basic printing colours. They are trying to replicate the multiple colour screen print method by using standard four colour machines...so there are going to be differences, both in colour and fine detail. It is just recognising them that is the problem. As for the silk: well the Chinese were wearing silk a thousand years before the European renaissance, so they know how to make silk!

Dear Mr. Clarke, How can get access to the info about la Promenade de Longchamps that you have transferred to Facebook, without subscribing to Facebook ? I would like to see the pictures that disappeared from ebay. Thank you.

Based on what appears on some sites selling fakes that I checked out (thought it was a good way to see the enemy and know what NOT to get), one of which has photos of scarves that look scaringly like the real thing, I can't be sure of any Hermes sold on eBay anymore (maybe unless it's so old that it's not on the list of designs targeted). I thought I'd pass these sites to you so you can update your very helpful listing of designs to avoid: http://www.forwest.com/hermes-scarves : this one has some photos that look like the real thing - or maybe they photograph a real one, but sell you a bad copy? http://www.luxury4replica.net http://amazing4scarf.com thank you for all your efforts at maintaining the guide! and if you have any reassuring words to provide (tell me that the fakers still aren't that good), I'd like to know!

The seller is reputable (accepts PayPal and allows for returns) but I want to be sure

Wow this guide has helped most definitely. so my first question is if a seller starts the bid at say $9.99 for a scarf is that too good to be true? And second I found thus a rare and lovely Brides de Gala Scarf on ebay but it is small (16" by 16") Did Hermes ever issue their scarves that small Here is the item link http://www.ebay.com/itm/251154625198?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Would love to hear your feedback thanks! I am gradually tranfserring these guides to Facebook, where the photos come out a lot clearer. This is going to take some time. I have the Guides on labels set up there now. Try this link: http://www.facebook.com/Hermes.Scarf.Guides

A Gremlin seems to have removed about half of the photos in my Hermes guides. Ebay says that the only way to get them back is to re-load them....grrrrr. This is going to take me some time. Please be patient. G.
