Home-Start began in 1973, when Margaret Harrison CBE identified the need for one to one support for parents with young children. 35 years on there are around 340 local Home-Starts in communities all over the UK, providing home visiting volunteers, carefully trained and matched to each individual family's needs. Home-Start volunteers visit the family for a few hours every week to give emotional and practical support to parents facing issues such as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or just finding parenting a struggle. Currently more than 15,000 Home-Start volunteers visit over 34,700 families and their 71,600+ children. This service is free and confidential.
