NIkon Coolpix S210 - a traveller's snap-shoter
When I've been looking for my new digital camera, I wanted something cheap, simple and easy to use. I'm not a professional and use camera mostly in my travels or on some occasion. So the last thing I was looking for was a camera that you've got to tune for every shot using 30 different settings (usually I'm quite annoyed by any electronic gadgets that tend to be cleverer then human!). I used to have several models before; Olympus Myu, Canon Ixus and Sony W-series. None of them was perfect for me. Nikon model have been chosen by three major reasons. First of all, I was convinced that Nikon has some competence in photografy so I was expecting good price-to-quality ratio. Second, in my search trough other customer reviews I've got a lot a good references about Coolpix series and particularily about S210. And the last thing - I was very fond of my friend's old 5 mpx Nikon I used once. It has given me all I wanted. Every single word I've heard about S210 model was true. A proper snap-shoter! It is simple, so don't count on stabilizer, but the rest of automatics does the job very well. Only sometimes you'd better tune the scene mode for a proper brightness and contrast (16 pre-set options). S210 isn't the best for shoting in the dark, neither for close-ups. However, in normal conditions it makes very nice pictures. A user's advise, don't try to get extra-quality going to 8 mpx High mode - you won't get much better. 5 mpx Normal will do just fine. And don't set ISO above 200, it won't help either. It's a simple thing for a simple job. Honest as a spanner, I'd say. Another advantage, it uses standard SD/HDSD memory card (a rock into Sony's window!) that fits most of laptops and self-service photo printers. Preview works fine, but mind that picture on the screen is a bit brighter then you get it on PC monitor. The only thing that I'd love to change in S210 is the mode selector, it's a little gash. You've got to press 3...4 buttons without a miss just to go from photo to video or scene mode. Meanwhile, 3 of 6 options are rarely used. I would stick with conventional 3-pos slider instead, leaving the rest of options in the main menu. Well, not a big issue. Summary: good choice for a novice or non-professional, good for general use, worth every penny.
