I have been involved for the past 12 years working with disaffected and underpriveleged young people in North London. I educate , mentor and counsel mainly people who have been discarded by society and schools. I am not funded by any source.
So many young people are being excluded and alienated without thought of where these people will go once excluded. It's as though many authorities are passing the buck. I can catagorically state that once a young person falls away from school or is shown the door that unless they can access a pupil referral unit they are thrown into a situation where they are open to exploitation by unscrupulous so called charities who will secure funding for them and provide very little in terms of education or facilities that these young people so desperately need.
Schools are happy to offload these young people and forget about them, they normally end up in great difficulty- crime, drugs, alienation are just some of the consequences. Many have experienced difficult childhoods and come from families who are at the bottom end of the economic strata. Many are Fatherless and addiction and mental health issues very often are present in the family history.
