Canon G11 compact (ish) digital camera
21 of 22 found this helpful Well I have spent along time deliberating what digital compact to go for, because as a previous very keen amateur photographer, who spent years luggging 2 bodies 2 motor drives and 8 lenses plush flashguns meters filters tripod etc. The decision was a single camera or start building a system again?
I decided that based on reviews I had to have a G11 Canon has made a very brave step and lowered the megapixel count from the G10 to improve digital noise, this was a request from many pro users of the G10. Worse case scenario the G11 will make me want to be taking more and more pictures so I take the plunge and buy a DSLR and the G11 becomes an excellent back up.
Likes: Great build quality it feels a very solid rugged camera. The screen being a flip out and rotate is very versatile for above head shots, low angle shots or self portraits it is a great 3" screen with wonderful image quality it gives you a lot of confidence that you have captured what you want. So many features the scene settings are great if I hand the camera to a non photo buff then the aperture/shutter priority and full manual plus average centre and spot metering give me everything I need. The results have been awesome this camera will deliver I have enlarged to A3 so far and well wow, a friend who rums a gallery said he would be happy to sell the pictures from this camera and he is mega fussy so I count this as high praise indeed. As a keen amateur just getting into digital imaging I new RAW image capture was important for those who do not know this means the large file that records your picture is not processed in any way in camera it is the image as captured, unsharpened, uncorrected RAW data. This means it is much easier to manipulate later with quality software on your computer such as Photoshop CS3 or Elements.
Dislikes only a few niggles I have small hands so I am quite fortunate, but canon have put a lot of features on this camera and accidental button pressing can happen, I wanted an off camera flash bracket to make holding a large flashgun and the camera easier Canon do a SB2 bracket which includes the OCE3 off camera flash cable sorry complete ripp off £149.99!!!!!! I manged to ebay a secondhand OCE3 for £29.00 and currently looking at several independant brakets that range from £14.99 to £29.99 so should be able to sort this for a third of the price Canon want. I was very dissapointed that you cannot fit a protective filter to this camera, and that the filter adapter canon make is a plastic tube which screws to the front of the camera and allows you to mount filters on the front. Surely a camera of this quality deserves a Aluminium solution that fits! Come on Canon. I have yet to notice the slight barrell distortion at the wide angle 28mm end mentioned in some reviews my wide angle shots have been fine. Finally although not an issue for me as I had handled the camera before purchase anyway this is not a pocket camera, it wont slip into the front of your shirt this is a serious piece of kit so you will require a small padded holdall if you are going to carry the charger or spare battery or a bigger flash memory cards etc. Or at least an old style eveready case that covers the whole camera.
I would also reccomend fitting a screen protector immediately on delivery that gorgeous 3" screen deserves to be protected.
In a few short weeks it has rekindled my passion for photgraphy in a way I never thought possible it is such a joy...I feel a system coming oh dear!
