Many cars have taken the names of designers, engineers or the industrialists that manufactured them.Few,however have been named after a child. At the turn of the 20th century. Emil Jellinek was the Austro-Hungarian consol in nice. He was a great champion of the motorcar and a salesman of Daimler automobiles. He raced Daimler cars using a team driver designation borrowed from the name of his 10year old daughter. 'Mercedes' is a spanish girls name meaning 'grace' In April 1900 Jellinek placed an order with the Daimler motor co. for 36 cars. He requested a number of design improvements, that the cars be named after his daughter 'Mercedes' and amazingly, that they be delivered in just six months time. The first 35hp 'Mercedes' racing car was delivered on dec 22nd 1900 and is today regarded as the first modern automobile. The 'Mercedes' trade name was legally registered on sept 26th and In 1903, Emil Jellinek changed his name to Jellinek-Mercedes. The rest as they say is history.
