Pricey, but worth it (maybe)...
In terms of looks and build quality: in a word, stunning.
In terms of sound quality: these phones can be stellar, but they are quite unforgiving of source and amplification. Plug them into your laptop (through an adapter - the 1/4in jack gives a hint that this is not the anticipated usage for headphones such as the W5000s) and you may well be disappointed. The ATH-W5000s are fairly bright sounding and very detailed and this can lead to listening fatigue. I bought a Yamamoto HA-02 which is well regarded as a good match, and while it's hard to put a finger on exactly what has changed; the detail is still there, the treble is still bright, but a certain warmth and "easiness" to the sound now makes these phones enjoyable for long listening sessions.
I was initially looking to spend half of what I did (excluding the amp) and while it's hard to call something at this price point good value for money, but let's just say I don't regret the purchase. At around £350 these would be an easy 5 stars, but as they're quite pricy and you'll need to budget for a decent amp (ideally the Yamamoto or the matching Audio Technica - both around £1k) I can only give these 4 stars.
