    Sound Loaded: Loaded with Fun
Well, I just finished panning Ricky Martin's Black and White tour CD in another review, so it's only fair to give justice where justice truly is due. Sound Loaded is a fun, fabulous album. Well and slickly produced, it truly is loaded, with lots of catchy tunes, that is. Makes my hips swing and my feet mark the beat uncontrollably while I'm driving or standing at the stove. Great stuff to listen to at the end of a long day, preferably cranked up in a cute little convertible. It's an instant lift. You can't be grim listening to this album. She Bangs (both versions), Loaded, Jezabel, Amore, all great songs. The slow songs are nice, but let's be honest here, the fast, hip swivelling, sexy ones are the ones we love, and they are here in abandon..... wild abandon. Fun album!

    Joyful, Consequence Free Music!
Listening to Great Big Sea will cause a great big smile to plaster itself acrost your face, a big silly grin born of indescribable, irresistable, joyful harmony and good times. Maybe it's the merry go round cover, maybe it's the happy go lucky theme of Consequence Free, or the swirling melody to the title track, Feel It Turn, with it's wonderful whistle counterpoint, but this album is like being on a musical playground. Canadian band Great Big Sea is multi-gold, and this record is one of the reasons why. They cross easily from the most basic of traditional songs (the stunningly simple four part acapella harmony of Old Brown's Daughter), to the rollicking I'm a Rover, to original material like Can't Stop Falling. I'm sitting here listening to it as I type this, and marvelling at the talented Bob Hallett, with his whistle, fiddle, and concertina. The others are no slouch either, Sean plays a mean bodhran, and having hung around rudimental drummers for years, I say that in all sincerity. All play great guitar, banjo, mandolin, and whatever else is called for. The delightful thing about GBS is that, singly, no one is a particularly outstanding world class singer, but together, they become something greater than the sum of the whole, and become a world class group. These guys were meant to be together. Music should be entertaining, creative, memorable, fun, intelligent, enjoyable, and above all, satisfying to the soul. This album qualifies on all counts.

    Bouyant!!!
Bouyant! That is the single best word to describe Canadian band Great Big Sea's music. When co-lead singer Alan Doyle shouts "Get up! Get up! Get up!" to the live audience, it's not to get them to their feet- they're already there. It's to get them jumping in the air, hands over head, clapping and singing for all they're worth. Bouyant!! You can't sit down, and your spirits can't STAY down listening to a GBS song. Bouyant!!! Crowd interaction, a Great Big Sea trademark. If you can't make it to a live concert (I pity you!), then this CD is the next best thing. It is like a vacation on a disk. GBS takes old maritime folk tunes and brings a fresh, modern twist to them, while still enjoying the sweet melodies that made them favorites. Don't be fooled- just because they use traditional instruments, this is not a stodgy band. Their original material is amazing, and they do a healthy mix of trad and new material. The wonderful thing about GBS is that every time they play a song, they play it in a new and different way. So while the Road Rage album naturally includes live versions of studio songs, each and every one is different from what you've heard before- not a rote rehash like some bands do. Donkey Riding, a personal favorite, has been pumped up on adrenaline. Gosh, so many good, good tunes, not a bad one on the album....Up!, Everything Shines, Excursion Around the Bay, everything is tight, enjoyable, and definitely live. Alan's voice isn't cracking-he's laughing at the crowd while singing Consequence Free. He's obviously having a good time, and doggone it, so do I when I listen to this album. Sean McCann the Shanty Man is in fine fettle during General Taylor, and even during the oddly tuneful Hanging Johnny, a delightfully macabre song about a hangman enjoying his work. And there are blissfully fun versions of The Old Black Rum and The Night That Paddy Murphy died. This is the CD I play over and over and over again. If you have to have only one GBS album, this is the one, but why oh why would you want only one?
