Jethro Tull-Benefit (US IMPORT) CD with DVD NEW
02 Sep, 2017
The one that got away!
Ian Anderson has said Benefit was a guitar riff album which is a rather dark and stark, although it has a few songs on it that are rather okay. He also added that it didn't have the breadth, variety or detail of their previous album, Stand Up. Former JT members, Martin Barre and the late Glen Cornick have fonder memories of this album and so do I, feeling it has been overlooked having been sandwiched in between the number one album, Stand Up and the multi platinum world success of Aqualung. The keyboards and piano work of John Evan are wonderful - and to think he wasn't even a permanent member of the band at this stage - giving this album the classic Tull sound following the more bluesy sound of the previous two. Improved studio technology such as reverse recording and the manipulation of tape speed give the music on this album a whole new dimension but ultimately it's the quality of the songs and musicianship which make this album a cut above. Alive and Well and Living In, Son, To Cry You a Song are fabulous and sound terrific on this Steve Wilson stereo remix which includes the singles, Sweet Dream and both the UK and US versions of the underated Teacher.
