We are a small, family business, based in Jersey selling a variety of ethically traded and (as a bit of a bonus) lovely things. The majority of our stock is made up of beautiful sterling silver jewellery, some of it set with semi-precious stones, but some other fair trade bits and bobs may have snuck in too... The workshop supplying our jewellery has been inspected and approved by representatives of the Dutch Fairtrade Organisation and is situated in Jaipur, the second most important gemstone exporting city in India. The indigenous craftspeople of the city have been hand cutting and polishing gems for more than 250 years and, even amidst modernisation, Jaipur's gems industry essentially retains its cottage character.

Paypal is our preferred method of payment but from UK customers we also accept personal cheque, postal order or bankers draft. If paying by cheque, postal order or bankers draft please make it payable to DAWN MONKS. Please also be aware that Paypal echeques take 9 working days to clear from a UK bank account. All 'A New Dawn' jewellery is hand made in India using the 'lost wax' casting method - a traditional technique which has been used for thousands of years and, unlike the highly mechanised vacuum casting method used for the majority of Thai jewellery, is inexpensive and provides a greater level of employment. Also our casting method uses copper rather than the often used cadmium which has much higher levels of toxicity. The jewellery designs are first created in wax, which is then pressed into a tray of firm sand. The sand is then heated to melt the wax away, leaving a hollow impression into which the molten sterling silver is poured. As you can imagine the resulting 'jewellery' bears little resemblance to the finished article! There is an awful lot of filing and polishing to be done to remove unwanted burrs and blemishes and to achieve the desired finish.

The Gems: All our gemstones are cut by hand on a hand driven grinding wheel. The gem cutters undergo many years of training to be able to cut all the angles purely by eye. The angles are extremely important - if the side of the gem is too steep or too shallow the light will not reflect inside the stone and the gem will appear dull. Gem cutters retire at about 35 years of age because their eyesight is no longer good enough to judge the cutting angle. But don't worry, they're not thrown on the scrapheap! They go on to teach the next generation of gem cutters. The Silver: Our jewellery is all made from sterling silver and is tested for purity before coming to the UK. All items weighing 7g or more are sent to the Birmingham Assay Office to be tested and hallmarked - items below 7.78g are exempt from the Hallmarking Act and, due to the charges involved, it would not be practical to mark smaller items.
