Business InformationHistory/background
The League celebrates its Centenary in 2009. We started as a campaining orgainsation, lobbying for welfare legislation to protect pit ponies and othe rworking horses. Later, the League merged with other charities, including the Carlisle Animals' Friends, and took on an active role in helping animals of all kinds. For many years, our Animals' Refuge was a pit pony retirement centre, but we also cared for dogs, cats and small animals.
Today, the Refuge operates the Dog Warden Service for Carlisle, ensuring stray dogs are kept safely off the streets and reunited with their owners, and those that are not claimed are found new homes whenever possible. In 2006, the Refuge found homes for over 500 animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. There are permanent residents, too - elderly horses, donkeys, and goats who have come to Oak Tree Farm to retire. We receive no government funding, and rely on fundraising to maintain our welfare work.
