This vacuum is almost too good!
I rent a house, and I've gotten sick of the obligatory clapped out bagged vacumm landlords always throw in (I'd rather they threw them out). When the last museum piece died on me in the middle of the spring clean, I decided it was finally time to go bagless. I couldn't afford a Dyson and nearly settled on a VAX. But when I was looking at vacuums with HEPA filters, the Philips Marathon caught my eye. As a first time user of bagless cylinder cleaners I can't tell you how this product compares to a Dyson, although I saw reviews that said it was as good, if not better. I think it's lived up to its reputation. It is very stylish, in black orange and green. Once out of the box, I was amazed that the machine comes with 6 (6!!) different head attachments, one for every job you could imagine . The most useful of these being the Tri-Active nozzle and the Turbo nozzle, on which more later. It would have been nice if the body had more places to put the accessories, but this is a minor niggle anyway, all you want a vacuum to do is pick up stuff and it can do that wonderfully! The vacuum comes practically ready to go straight out of the box, I didn't have to fit any filters, just fitted the handle and nozzle, plugged in its extra long retractable cable and turned it on. This is a really quiet vacuum, it powers up with a whoosh before reaching full power. There are variable levels of suction, and even on the top setting it doesn't reach that shrill screaming you sometimes get. I tried the Tri nozzle first, which is designed for hard floors and carpets. There's an foot operated adjustable lever to switch between hard floor and carpet setting. On hard floors it is excellent, we have laminate and tiling, and it managed to get every single particle. You won't believe how clean your house can be until you try this vacuum. It has brushes positioned all the way round the nozzle, so it can even sweep up dust from behind, making it much less of a struggle in hard to reach areas. On the carpet setting, the suction is so great you can barely move the handle back and forth, meaning movement is very jerky. However it still gave excellent cleaning, and the amount of dust going into the filter chamber showed! If you've got a lot of hair to pick up this is where the Turbo nozzle comes into play. This has rotating brushes that gather up everything, lifting hair and crumbs. When I was done with the rug and carpet, I couldn't find a single speck of dust or hair, so different from when my old vacuum used to actually spit dirt back onto the carpet! It's great on stairs too, although my stairs are not wide enough for it to rest comfortably on, but it is light enough that you can hold it while you vacuum. It has 2 sturdy carry handles on the body. The Marathon has an amazing 9m cable, that all retracts into the body at the press of a button. It meant I could plug it in in the kitchen and take it all the way upstairs and do the landing without unplugging! The HEPA filter is great too, I suffer from dust allergies sometimes, and after using the Marathon, even the air in the house felt somehow cleaner and fresher. The cylinder is really easy to open for emptying, make sure you're outside though because the dust can go everywhere. If you need a vacuum, you will not do better than this amazing machine, at £80-£130 it looks like Philips might have knocked the wind out of Dysons sails (sales?). Pardon the pun, but this is a cleaner that looks like it could run and run!
